Report of three snowmobilers triggering a slab avalanche on a N-NE facing slope in the Diamond Peak area of the Whitefish Range near Upper Whitefish Lake. Elevation approx. 6000-6500 ft.
Slab was approx. 50-70 yards wide and 15-18 inches deep. Runout was approx. 800 yards long. Layer was fresh deposits on a stable snowpack on a 40 degree slope.
Snowmobilers had made several runs up slope and sidehilling across. Break occurred 150 feet above highest snowmobile mark along a series of spread out rocks.
Snow layer was light and fast moving. Runout was still powdery in form at rest but can have a hard packing tendency with the days to come. As the afternoon went on the danger seemed to increase significantly with the temperatures rising.
No report of injuries. Will report more if information becomes available.
